Knotty by Nature

Hubby has started looking for a yarn shop to visit on all our trips, what a thoughtful man! In Victoria he found the most delightful yarn shop, Knotty by Nature . The store had been an old corner store grocery years ago an sat in the middle of a residential area. As I entered the shop there was a local knitter sitting at the small table outside the door basking in the sun. Immediately, I knew it was my kind of shop! It was filled with all types of yarn and roving. Ryan, the yarn shop owner, was so friendly and helpful. When I asked about locally made yarn he showed me several, quickly skimming over a section of his own hand dyed yarn. As I shopped around the store I found a lovely Blue Moma Bag and found myself back in the midst of Ryan's yarn. I chose two skeins with strong greens. I wanted to make something for our trip to Ireland next year. Misako had worn a cowl she'd made several times while on the Vancover Island so knitting cowls for us was a natural choice. I love t

A new sock worthy recipient

The Tiger doesn't want any socks knit for him and I was hesitant to knit Nephew Sam any because of that. Perhaps "cool" kids don't want handknit socks? So while on vacation I asked Sam if he’d wear handknit socks if I made him some. He got a big smile on his face and gave me a nod. We made a template of his foot so I’d know size then we talked color… he had no preference, so the first pair he gets is a bright orange pair! Later when I told his mom about our conversation she told me he’d been wondering why he hadn’t gotten any when the rest of his family received them for Christmas and Birthdays. Won't happen again Sam! Pattern: Fish Lips Kiss Heel Yarn: Regia Design Line Colorway: Twilight Needle Size: US Size 1

Top Cat socks

The Grocery Girls March Sock Bash theme was TV Book or Movie and so I thought I’d try my hand as sock designing again and make “Top Cat” Socks based on the cartoon in the early 60’s. TC was the leader of a group of alley cats in New York. Sadly I was in Canada and didn’t get them submitted in time, missing the March cut off. Pattern: Top Cat Socks by Emptyknitster Yarn: Cascade Yarns Heritage Paints Colorway: Tortoiseshell April Sock Bash Theme: Socks from faraway!

A Canadian knitter spotted in the wild

After walking through the Royal BC Museum presentation of Wildlife Photographer of the Year, SIL spotted my Canadian knitter in action! He was happy to be in the photo tho a bit embarrassed. When I said I usually had my knitting with me and liked to knit with my fellow knitters he tossed me his slipper so I'd have a prop!

Victoria, British Columbia

We're just back from a trip to Canada. Late last year my brother asked if we'd like to meet him in Victoria for a few days and being the fancy free retirees that we are, we happily agreed to the hop on a plane. The day began early with a 4:30 wake up call. We flew to Seattle and on to Vancouver where we rented a car and drove a short distance to the ferry terminal. It was a beautiful morning and the ferry ride to the island filled with memories. I remember the many times as a child I took the ferry from Seattle over to the peninsula to visit my aunt. Usually the rides were with my family but in the summer I'd visit by myself, getting on the ferry as a passenger with Mom's Samsonite cosmetic bag filled with a weeks worth of clothes. On one trip my cousin and I were crossing the sound together. She was going to buy each or us a soda. In went the coins, the paper cup dropped down and I picked it up and said, "It didn't give us any pop!" then the liquid bega
