First completed knitted project of 2013

These are a pair of sock I knit on the fly. I had taken measurements of The Pirate's foot while I was visiting before Christmas and on the plane back to Montana I began knitting what I thought would fit the boy. I was delighted last week when Sadie Lou tried them on and they fit her. She loves them and I hope The Pirate will too. You knit socks...are you CRAZY?

I've been asked about my new interest/love of sock knitting.... I don't like just sitting or waiting twiddling my thumbs. Meetings drive me crazy because usually only a tenth of the information has anything to do with me. Appointments at the doctor's always leave me waiting. Traveling, car or plane, involves little movement and lately a lot of waiting at the airport. These are perfect times to bring out the emergency knitting! Sock projects can easily be carried in the "Momma bag" sized purse most of us carry, but I soon realized the pattern was often misplaced. Memorizing the following simple pattern has been a great solution:   Emergency Knitting  Top Down Sock Pattern : -Size 1 circular needles -Cast on 72 stitches -Knit ribbing in the round to desired length (about 1 inch) -Knit cuff as long as you like (7 inches total for me) -Put waste yarn in for the after thought heel to be knit later -Knit the foot to end of your baby toe -Decrease 2 sts o...

"No Pattern" Socks

Recently, the Purl Gurls had a discussion on sock knitting at our Friday Happy Hour Knitting. I sang  praises for the "No Pattern" Socks that I had recently knit. Several asked me to write the pattern for the "No Pattern" Socks - it was good for a chuckle! "No Pattern" Socks An off road sock lesson from Lala, Judy's magic cast on , The KnitGirllls after thought heel , Cat Bordhi's reinforcement of the heel, Jeny's Surprisingly stretchy bind off and Kitchner Stitch ! Needle Size: US size 1 (this makes a much more durable sock) Use Judy’s Magic Cast On starting with 8 total stitches and increase every other row until there are 64 stitches. (32 on each needle, I use 2 circulars) Knit until the sock is at the place where your leg attaches at a right angle to the foot and then knit a piece of waste yarn into 32 of the stitches, then slide them back and knit these stitches with the regular yarn you have been using. ( The KnitGirll...

Busy times

This is my twenty third year of teaching and each of the twenty three years has started out mind bogglingly busy. This is the only thing about the beginning of the school year I can count on. There are different rules, schedules, technology, expectations of what is to be taught, and students. It's a great job for a person who struggles with ADD like tendencies, forcing a complete and final finish in June and a bright and shiny future in the fall. But I'm not ADD.  I like having control, starting and completing everything in sequential order! So in the middle of all the hoo-hah I turned to what gives me total inner peace, you know... knitting! I started and finished several projects: Scott's Socks Pattern:Donna's  Easy Socks Yarn: Austermann Step Colorway: Black/brown self striping Amount:one skein Needle size: US 2 School Shawl Pattern: Sort of Silk Kerchief pattern but not really. I used the instructions from the Milk Run Shawl to get started then looked at ...

Beartooth Mountain Mitts

This pattern was inspired by my love of The Beartooth Mountains and the early summer trips we take each year to the top.  The road is only open a short time each year. If the snow can be plowed from the road prior to Memorial Weekend it opens and will remain open until after Labor Day. To get to “The Top Of The World” one must go up - and then back down -  a narrow two lane switchbacked road. Pattern: Beartooth Mountain Mitts by Emptyknitster Yarn: Cascade 220 Heather Colorway: Galaxy Amount: 1 skein Needle size: US 3 Beartooth Mountain Mitts FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Cuff circumference: 7 inches (unstretched) Length: 6.25 inches MATERIALS: Cascade 220 1 set of US #3 needles Approx. 12 inches smooth waste yarn in a contrasting color Tapestry needle   PATTERN NOTES: BHC – (Back Half Cable), Knit in front of second stitch from needle point then knit first stitch on needle slide both stitches off needle FHC - (Front Half Cable), K in back of second stitch from need...

Aunt Tilly's baby blanket

When I visited my first grandchild as a baby, she was often wrapped in a very interesting blanket. It had been knit for my son-in-law by a family friend, whom they fondly referred to as Aunt Tilly. I spent the next few years searching for the pattern to this circular blanket. I knew it was not Elizabeth Zimmermann's Pi Shawl because it was NOT knit in the round, but in rows. You may think that you would never knit a circular shawl in rows but there is a reason to at least consider this pattern. If the blanket is knit in rows, it can be entirely knit in garter stitch - no purling! Personally, I don't care for a blanket or afghan pattern that has a "wrong" side. Knitting a blanket in garter stitch takes care of that problem. When the coming of the second grandchild was announced I went into overdrive trying to find Aunt Tilly's pattern but finally had to take the original blanket of my son-in-law's and stitch by stitch write down the instructions:...

American Girl knit slippers

I knit these slippers for my grandmother one Christmas and she loved them, I thought they were a great gift until my mom said she was afraid Gramma would slip in them. Oh baby, I LOVE these booties!

For the last week and a half I've been playing with this bootie pattern. I think that a little babe would have difficulty kicking them off their feet and they just look so warm! The booties would be a great little baby shower gift or charity knit, not to mention an outstanding stash buster. Oh, Baby! Baby Booties Oh, Baby! Baby Booties Sizes: Newborn, 3 months, 6 months Materials: size 5 US needles (31/2 mm) DK weight yarn, or 4 ply worsted for bigger booties
