First Fawn of the Season, 2020

Once again Hubby is the documented winner of the family First Fawn of the Season Competition. The finish is a bit early this year but won fair and square.

First Fawn of the Season

We were just getting geared up for our annual family contest, keeping an eagle eye on the area around our house, and carrying our phones everywhere. Surprisingly, the competition quickly came to a close when Hubby sent the winning photo this morning: Twin fawns but one was hidden... The winner of the 2019 First Fawn of the Season is Hubby!!

2018 "First Fawn Of The Season" winner declared...

We've been playing the very competitive game of "First Fawn of the Season" for many years. This year the competition has been especially grueling. Some years a winner is declared over Memorial weekend and other years as late as July 2. This is the latest we've ever declared a winner and it's not because we haven't been looking. Hubby and I have gone on our walks with cameras at the ready, or driven down the road posed for a photo shoot, but it wasn't until today the first fawn of the season made an appearance. Sarah and I were having our morning cup of coffee on the deck this morning when I noticed little Polly Picket perk up and look over the railing. She'd spotted a fawn just a few feet away, eating daisies!  And so there you go, another year and another winner..... Polly Picket wins the 2018 annual competition!

2017 "First Fawn of The Season" in the books

It's that time of the year again, with a big difference. Hubby and I weren't the only people playing this year.  There were a few additional contestants with family visiting earlier than usual this summer.  The California Dreamin' family and The Chick were quickly made aware of the rule required to play the game:  It must be a confirmed siting, involving PHOTOGRAPHIC PROOF. Everyone got into the swing of it, carrying their cameras on all walks. As usual Hubby saw the first fawn but the proof was nonexistent in his photo. Bri was right behind him with her camera but disqualified herself because all you could see was a very small bum - or tree stump, we're not sure. It didn't take long for the next siting. The next evening Chloe ALittleBit was just finishing her walk, and  heading up the driveway when there by the garage was not one fawn but TWO! How are your skills at finding those little guys? Way to go Chloe, 2017 winner of the First Fawn of The Season compe...

First Fawn of the season 2016

You know the rules by now...must be a confirmed sighting (photo) to be declared the winner. Last Wednesday Hubby texted me, "Saw first fawn 0646 this AM. No pic. Moral victory." And with that message I knew this year's game had begun! We both began carrying our cameras and were on the lookout constantly. Alas, I had to bow to the victor this morning... Major Score!

First Fawn of the Season 2015

Fair is fair and even though I was in New Orleans at 9:10 pm hubby became the winner of the annual First Fawn of the Season Competition ! Here is this year's documentation:  Turkey babies quickly followed:

UFO siting 2015

Our family has a competition every year called "The First Fawn Of The Season." It must be a documented sighting (photo) and if you have an U nconfirmed F awn O bservation - or UFO - it is NOT a win. For Hubby, ever a competitor, this is one of the best contests ever! Today he had a UFO, about two weeks earlier than usual but the weather has been mild. Immediately he put his good camera in his truck so he'll be prepared to be a winner! Photo coming soon, I'm sure!

Winner, winner, chicken dinner 2014!

Every year our family has a contest called " The first Fawn of the Season ." The rules have evolved over the years. 1) Not only is it the sighting of a fawn but 2) it must be documented for the win.  Over a week ago, while I was in Helena, Hubby excitedly texted the first sighting of the year.  However, at the time he was responding to a general alarm and so no photo. This gave not only me but the two grandkiddos a chance to hunt down the win! We've been on the lookout ever since... but to no avail. This morning, on Hubby's way to work, he took this photo:   Not one fawn for the win but two! - I bow down to the winner, great documentation!

First Fawn Photo 2013

While I was in Big Sky visiting the brothers, Hubby was able to capture the first official photo of fawn 2013! Momma and babe were next door for these photos. When Hubby tried to get a little too close Momma gave a snorted through her nose. Babe went one way and she went another!

First Fawn of the season 2013

As Hubby and I were heading into town today, I spotted the first fawn of the year! Although I sounded crazy shouting, "STOP" a zillion times, Hubby's reaction was a bit slow and by the time he turned around the fawn and momma were gone. It was a tiny little thing following closely behind its momma. Sadly, official rules state it is not a true spotting until there is a photo so I will diligently continue to be on lookout until there is confirmation!

First Fawn 2012

Continuing the family competition called  The First Fawn Sighting , this morning Hubby and I were plotting out our day when I spotted the first fawn of the season out our living room window! Hubby immediately said it wasn't a "confirmed" siting. The Number One Rule is: Until there is a photo the siting is labeled unconfirmed. SO..... June 12, 1202 6:45 am Score! Checking the previous fawn sitings over the last four years this is the earliest yet.  The closest only four days later, June 16, 2010.

Its Twins!

This morning Hubby called as he was heading into town. He had not only seen the first set of twin fawns in the neighborhood but had taken photos! A bit blurry but I am pleased that he has taken on the yearly fawn challenge!

A visit to the Beartooth Highway and "The First Fawn of the Season"

Hubby and I decided to drive up to the top of the Beartooth Mountains Thursday. This is something we usually do at the annual opening of the highway on Memorial weekend. The Highway Department was right on schedule and opened the road Friday before Memorial Day but after a snowfall during the night it was closed the rest of the holiday weekend. We had forgotten about going until a comment was made on the local news about the amount of snow still on the mountain, we both looked at each other and off we went. Also, the "Annual First Fawn of the Season" Contest came to an end as we drove down the highway. Hubby stomped on the brakes when a new fawn hopped out of the tall grass and decided to run across the road. In confusion the fawn ran back and forth several times. I don't think it liked the feel of the pavement and was rather shaky before it finally headed back to where it's mom had left it - hopefully the fawn learned an important lesson and will stay where momma pl...

This and that - a quick catch up on everything.

I promised some pictures of The Chick's new nest. Here they are.... We also spent some time exploring the area. Sunday was a lovely afternoon so Chick and I drove up to Canyon Ferry and took a look around.  Last year at the beginning of the summer, I took many photos of  flowers . This must be the summer for the birds. Here is a lone pelican on the Missouri River just below the damn.   I need your input on this little night stand.    The Chick and I have a slight difference of opinion.   Chick wanted a nightstand to go with her black iron bed. I suggested that we go to the thrift store, after all, whatever we found would be painted black. I discovered this little (darling) table sitting in the corner. All the work had been done for us. Someone had spent a lot of time sanding it down to bare wood. If the person had done much refinishing, he would have known that right before you stain and varnish, the item usually looks like the project is a hopeless...

Documented sighting

Every year the family has a contest of sorts, it's called - The First Fawn Sighting. The rules are simple, the first person to see a fawn wins. Kate saw the first fawn out of the county, on the way to Chico Hot Springs last week. (No win - not in the county.) Hubby saw the first fawn in the subdivision, twins in fact. He "says" they were in the road with their mother on the other side of the guardrail. The twins had to run up the street, to the top of the guardrail and back down again to get to their mom. They were to small to jump over. That's pretty small, I'll give him that! (No win - new rule - undocumented.) BUT I just got up 15 minutes ago and was wandering around the house, looking out windows, making sure I still had flowers, looking to see if the wind had blown anything unusual in - you know doing the early morning security check. And down in the gully I saw a movement, a deer! Now if you have been around deer you know that when they begin having the...
